Recent Changes to the BCBS Prefix Format
The three character BCBS prefix identifies the account or plan to which the member belongs. Most BCBS cards issued before 2018 contained only alpha prefixes (with a few exceptions like FEP). The BCBS Association ran out of alpha prefix combinations in 2018 and began assigning alpha numeric BCBS prefixes to new groups. I’m adding the alpha numeric prefixes to these lists as I find them. The new BCBS prefix format is on the card example below.
Why is the BCBS Prefix Important?
The prefix is important because it helps your local BCBS plan to identify how to route claims and EDI transactions via Blue Exchange.
- Never make up a prefix or file a claim with an old or incorrect prefix. This will result in delayed payment or the denial of claims.
- When filing a claim, always enter the ID number, including the alpha prefix, exactly as it appears on the member’s card.
- Always include the member’s ID number, including the alpha prefix, on any documents pertaining to services to ensure accurate handling by the BCBS Plan.
